Let’s be candid and honest for a quick second or two.
How is your prayer life right now?
If you hesitated before answering, you’re not alone. So many of us start with good intentions. We want to pray, and we know we should pray. But somewhere between the alarm going off and the endless scroll, prayer quietly slips away.
I’ve been there. More than once.
The truth is, there are real, sneaky things quietly working against us. And knowing the 5 things that kill your prayer life is the first step to actually fixing it.
This post is going to do two things. First, we’ll name what’s stealing your prayer time. Then, I’ll give you 10 completely different, practical ways to revive it starting today.
Let’s get into it.

Why Your Prayer Life Matters More Than You Think
Prayer isn’t a religious checklist item. It’s a conversation with the God who made you. It’s how you have an effective prayer life in a world that constantly pulls you elsewhere.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 says simply: “Pray without ceasing.”
That’s not a burden at all. It’s an open invitation to stay close to Jesus all day long. When you lose that closeness, you feel it. You feel scattered, overwhelmed, and strangely distant from God, even if you’re still going to church.
Understanding the 5 things that kill your prayer life gives you the power to change it.
The 5 Things That Kill Your Prayer Life
1. Distraction (Especially Your Phone)
This one hurts because it’s so true.
You pick up your phone to open your Bible app. First it’s Instagram. Then TikTok. Then it’s been 40 minutes and prayer never happened.
Distraction is one of the 5 biggest things that kill your prayer life. It doesn’t announce itself. It just quietly steals your time.
Jesus himself withdrew to lonely places to pray (Luke 5:16). He removed himself from noise on purpose. If Jesus needed to do that, so do we.
2. Guilt and Shame
Here’s a painful one. You missed prayer yesterday. So today feels awkward. You feel like you have to earn your way back to God first.
So you don’t pray at all.
Guilt is one of the sneakiest of the 5 things that kill your prayer life. It tells you God is disappointed. And it tells you you’re not good enough to come. But Romans 8:1 is clear: “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.“
God isn’t standing there with His arms crossed. He’s waiting for you to come back.
3. Busyness and a Packed Schedule
You genuinely want to pray. You just… don’t have time.
Sound familiar?
Busyness is number three on the 5 things that kill your prayer life list. And it’s arguably the most socially acceptable one. Nobody judges you for being busy.
But a full schedule with no room for God is a warning sign. It means something has taken His place as priority.

4. Not Knowing What to Say
Sometimes you sit down to pray and your mind goes blank. You don’t know how to start. You feel like your prayers are repetitive or that God must be bored of hearing from you.
This is one of the 5 things that kill your prayer life that nobody really talks about. But it’s so common.
The disciples felt this too. That’s literally why they asked Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray“ (Luke 11:1). You’re allowed to not have it all figured out.
5. Unanswered Prayers and Discouragement
You prayed. You really believed. It didn’t happen the way you hoped.
Discouragement after unanswered prayers is perhaps the most painful of the 5 things that kill your prayer life. It chips away at your faith slowly. You start to wonder if it’s worth it.
But Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us that God’s ways are higher than ours. What looks like silence is rarely indifference. Sometimes it’s protection. Sometimes it’s redirection.
10 Easy Ways To Fix Your Prayer Life
Now the good stuff. These are 10 completely different strategies to help you revive your prayer life. Pick one to start with. Come back for more later.
Fix #1 Create a “Phone-Free” Morning Window
Set a rule: no phone for the first 15 minutes of your morning. Use that time for prayer instead. Put your phone in another room the night before if you have to.
This tackles distraction head-on and is one of the most effective ways to have an effective prayer life daily. You’ll be amazed how much clearer your mornings feel.
Try this: Set an alarm 15 minutes earlier than usual tomorrow morning. Label it “talk to God first.”
Fix #2 Use the ACTS Prayer Method
If you don’t know what to say, give your prayer some structure. ACTS stands for:
- A — Adoration (praise God for who He is)
- C — Confession (be honest about where you’ve fallen short)
- T — Thanksgiving (thank Him for specific blessings)
- S — Supplication (bring your requests to Him)
This is a brilliant way to revive your prayer life when words feel dry. It gives you a roadmap without making prayer feel robotic.
Try this: Write ACTS on a sticky note. Keep it in your Bible or journal.
Fix #3 Pray Out Loud
This sounds simple. But it changes everything.
Praying out loud keeps your mind from wandering. It makes the conversation feel more real. It also trains your ear to hear yourself speak faith and truth over your own life.
If you share a room or a flat, whisper. That counts. This is a surprisingly effective way to improve your prayer life and it costs you absolutely nothing.
Try this: Pray your commute out loud today, even if it’s just five minutes.
Fix #4 Start a Prayer Journal
Writing your prayers down is completely different to praying aloud or in your head. It slows you down. It makes you think. And it gives you a record of God’s faithfulness over time.
When you feel discouraged about unanswered prayer, you can flip back through your journal. You will see prayers that were answered. That rebuilds faith quickly.
Try this: Buy a simple notebook. Date your first entry and just write to God like you’d write a letter to a friend.
Fix #5 Anchor Prayer to an Existing Habit
Don’t try to create a brand-new routine from scratch. Instead, attach prayer to something you already do every single day.
Brush your teeth? Pray while you do it. Make your morning coffee? Pray while it brews. Walk to the bus stop? Pray the whole way there.
This is called habit-stacking, and it’s one of the most practical answers to the question of how to revive your prayer life when you feel like you have no time.
Try this: Pick one daily habit. Decide right now what you’ll pray during it.

Fix #6 Use Scripture as Your Starting Point
When you don’t know what to say, open your Bible and pray the words back to God. This is called praying the Scriptures, and it is incredibly powerful.
Read a verse. Then turn it into a prayer. For example, Psalm 23:1 says, “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.” You could pray: “Lord, you are my shepherd. I trust you to provide everything I need today.“
This approach is completely different to Fix #2 and Fix #4. It goes deeper. It grounds your prayers in God’s own Word. Learning to do this is central to how to have an effective prayer life long-term.
Try this: Read one Psalm today and rewrite it as a personal prayer.
Fix #7 Confess the Gap and Come Back Anyway
If guilt is killing your prayer life, the antidote is radical honesty.
Don’t try to clean yourself up before you come to God. Just come. Say it straight: “God, I haven’t spoken to you in days. I’m sorry. I’m here now.“
That’s a prayer. A real one.
Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us approach the throne of grace with confidence.“ Not with performance. Not with polished words. With confidence, because of Jesus.
Try this: Right now, before you finish this post, say something to God. Anything. Just begin again.
Fix #8 Find a Prayer Partner or Accountability Friend
This fix is relational and completely different to all the others. It’s one human being helping another stay close to God.
Find one trusted Christian friend. Agree to check in with each other about your prayer lives weekly. You don’t have to share everything. Just, “Did you pray this week? Me neither. Let’s do better.“
Matthew 18:20 says that where two or three gather in His name, He is there. Community makes the commitment stick. This is one of the most underused ways to improve your prayer life.
Try this: Text one friend today. Ask if they want to be prayer accountability partners.
Fix #9 Try Praying Through Worship Music
Sometimes words genuinely fail. You’re tired. You might be sad. There may be days you feel numb. But you still want to come to God.
Put on a worship playlist and just sit with it. Let the lyrics become your prayer. Close your eyes. Sing along, or don’t. Let the music carry you into God’s presence when you can’t get there on your own.
Psalm 22:3 tells us that God inhabits the praises of His people. Worship is a doorway into His presence. This is one of the most comforting ways to revive your prayer life in a difficult season.
Try this: Make a “quiet worship” playlist. Use it on days when words are hard.
Fix #10 Set a “Prayer Appointment” in Your Calendar
You wouldn’t skip a doctor’s appointment. Or a work meeting. And you wouldn’t miss lunch with your best friend.
So block out time for God in your actual diary. Set a recurring calendar event. Give it a proper title. Treat it as unmovable.
This fix is not about making prayer feel clinical. It’s about making it intentional. In a packed life, the things we don’t plan for don’t happen. Scheduling prayer is how many women successfully build the habit of having an effective prayer life consistently over months and years.
Try this: Open your calendar right now. Block out 10 minutes tomorrow morning. Title it “With God.”
You Can Have a Thriving Prayer Life Again
Here’s what I want you to know before you close this tab.
God is not fed up with you. He is not distant. He’s not keeping score. He is a Father who longs for connection with His daughter, and that’s you.
Knowing the 5 things that kill your prayer life is genuinely useful. But knowledge alone doesn’t change anything. Action does.
You don’t have to fix everything at once. Pick one thing from this list. Just one. Do it today. Come back next week for another one.
Learning how to revive your prayer life is rarely one big dramatic moment. It’s usually a hundred small choices to come back. And every single one of them counts.
Philippians 4:6 says: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.“
Every situation. That includes yours. Right now.
So go talk to Him.
